Case Study: Cost savings made to benefit Melton Mowbray Market

Consultus call upon CORA (Cost Optimisation & Recovery Audit) to make business energy supply capacity savings for Melton Mowbray Market.

Background

Melton Mowbray Market isn’t just England’s largest town centre livestock auction, it’s an institution that has been going on for the best part of 1,000 years.

The market’s facilities include a tavern, which has a banqueting suite, and many on-site tenants, including a brewery, where Round Corner Brewing’s beers are made and sampled.

Powering the commercial floor space takes a large amount of electricity, so value for money is important to safeguard their energy spend.

Consultus have been working with Melton Mowbray Market to identify savings, focussing on energy usage and associated charges.

This led to Consultus’ CORA service being completed, which included a full review of their half-hourly (HH) electricity meters that proved fruitful.

Solutions

After the CORA analysis was complete, the recovery audit of the process found all historical billing to be correct which, at least, gave the client peace of mind.

But there were benefits to be claimed through cost optimisation, relating to their Target Charging Review (TCR) and Agreed Capacity Supply (ASC) charges.

TCR is a bill-contained payment that goes towards energy network maintenance for transmission, distribution and balancing.

This has been reviewed by Ofgem, the industry regulator, and the TCR contribution is supposed to be spread proportionately, based on a business’ size and meter set-up.

ASC, which is an accepted maximum amount of energy a site can draw from the national grid at any given time, forms the basis of TCR banding.

Outcomes

Melton Mowbray Market has two HH meters, which are subject to a fixed daily fee that is dependent on the ASC. The higher an ASC, the more this amount is.

Consultus, through CORA, advised that both ASC units be reduced, resulting in decreased capacity charges of more than £3,000 a year.

One supply also qualified for TCR band movement, by changing its Maximum Import Capacity (MIC), which worked out at almost £6,000 less per annum.

Melton Mowbray Market have acted upon these recommendations and are on course for cost savings, through the no-win, no-fee CORA service.

This comes in a timely manner, for the client, with increased Distribution Use of System (DUoS) fixed charges coming into force, which can be offset by ASC and MIC reductions.

Testimonial

Hugh Brown, the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Melton Mowbray Market, commented: “No energy broker or supplier has ever told me that you pay twice for your capacity.

“Through a capacity charge and inflated standing charges, businesses are now being asked to pay more, in what is an increasingly broken market.

“Consultus not only highlighted this, but also said they could change it and took us through the process, to save thousands of pounds a year.”
