Tips for saving energy around the workplace

Saving Energy

There is no doubt that your organisation has been affected by the current price hike in energy costs, and so it is more important now than ever to start making small changes in your day-to-day activities to start saving on energy consumption. It is important to recognise that it is down to both an individual, and organisational level to chip in!

And as a bonus, it will also help towards achieving your Net Zero goals too.

Energy Saving Tips

Below are a few tips on how you can be more efficient on energy consumption and cut down your overall energy costs.

Energy Goals

Firstly, you should set some energy saving objectives and communicate them across your whole business. This could be putting up posters around the office to make staff aware of what changes they can make, or you could even create an energy saving competition. You can also ask employees to participate through giving their own ideas on how to save energy to create a real buzz around the subject.

Lighting

You can also try to use natural light where, and as much as, possible. Using the natural sunlight will help cut costs of using office lighting if the office is lit up enough from the direct sunlight. Sunlight also makes for happy employees!

When you do need to use office lighting, you should consider using more efficient lightbulbs such as halogen and LED lights rather than the incandescent bulbs. These bulbs will last longer and consume less power saving you money in the long term.

Heating

Along with using more efficient lighting, you can also turn off heating when you are not in the building. This will save you extra money since you will not be heating a room which is not in use. Other ways to stay warm are taking brisk walks during your breaks, ensuring that windows aren’t left open, dressing appropriately for the weather it’s hot or cold and also having a hot drink.

Equipment

It’s also good practice to switch off any unused equipment. This can be anything from laptops and computers to coffee machines and kettles. Even on standby mode, equipment will still use energy.

Reducing the amount of printing can also save energy costs for the business. By not printing as much, you are also saving paper. This will also increase the lifetime of your printer. However, if you do need to print, we suggest printing on both sides of the paper. To improve your green credentials even further, consider switching to an FSC or PEFC approved paper, which means that it comes from a sustainable source and will support your CSR commitment as a business.

Car Sharing

Talking of Net Zero, another useful tip is to encourage car sharing when travelling to the office. This will cut down on transportation costs for individual employees and give an opportunity for general chit chat on the journey to work – you never know, this could lead to a creative innovation on the work front too!

Achieving Net Zero

The government has set a target for businesses to achieve Net Zero by 2050. This means having a balance of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to the amount removed from the atmosphere.
